5am: Alarm clock goes off. Last things are being packed. Jon’s already in the car by 5.45 waiting for me to finish my very unorganized – as always – last minute stuff.
6am: We’re on our way.
7am: Score: much better than last year! No 2-hour detours to pick up forgotten driver’s licenses (read: mine). No coffee on the ceiling (again: mine. And yes, it was my first time driving an automatic car). This time we’re just enjoying sunny Arizona with its mountains and forests.
Lunchtime tip: Mike & Rhonda’s The Place. This classic diner in Flagstaff has a great selection of breakfast and lunch dishes (eggs, burgers, sandwiches.. $8-10).
5pm: We safely made it to our first KOA campground (in northern Albuquerque). Those are super conveniently spread out throughout the country.
Nice drive, smooth highway 40 east, getting started on the right foot!
Set up time of our new tent + interior: 20 minutes
Temperature: 6°C at 6.18pm
Distance: 600 miles down, 2500 to go!
